KEAGUNGAN ZHENG HE ATAU CHENG HO

Para peserta seminar yang dianjurkan oleh Royal Geographical Society di London beberapa tahun lalu dihidangkan dengan satu fakta yang mengejutkan. Seorang ahli kapal selam dan sejarawan bernama Gavin Menzies telah memberikan hujah dan kertas kerja mengenai kajiannya terhadap siapa orang yang pertama menjumpai benua Amerika. Pada seminar itu, Menzies menjelaskan bukti tentang pelayaran terkenal dari pelaut mahsyur berasal dari Cina, Laksamana Zheng He. Bersama bukti-bukti yang ditemui dari catatan sejarah, Menzies memberi kesimpulan bahawa pengembara terulung dari dinasti Ming itu adalah orang yang pertama menemui benua Amerika, bukannya Columbus. Menurut Menzies, Zheng He 'mengalahkan' Columbus dengan tempoh beza waktu sekitar 70 tahun. Kenyataan Menzies ini dikuatkan dengan sejumlah bukti sejarah. Menzies menunjukkan peta dunia yang dilukis sebelum Columbus memulakan ekspedisinya (gambar di atas). Peta itu lengkap dengan gambar benua Amerika serta sebuah peta astronomi milik Zheng He. Menzies melakukan kajian selama lebih dari 14 tahun. Ini termasuk kajian peta-peta kuno, bukti artifak dan juga pengembangan dari teknologi astronomi moden seperti melalui program software Starry Night. Dari bukti-bukti yang diperolehi, Menzies mengatakan bahawa sebahagian besar peta mahupun tulisan pelayaran China kuno bersumber pada pelayaran Laksamana Zheng He. Penjelajahannya sehingga mencapai benua Amerika mengambil waktu antara tahun 1421 dan 1423. Sebelum itu, armada kapal Zheng He berlayar menyusuri jalur selatan melalui Afrika dan sampai ke Amerika Selatan.
Perbandingan armada Zheng He dan Colombus Selama ini, masyarakat dunia mengetahui sejarah Zheng He sebagai penjelajah ulung tetapi tidak mendalami lebih dari itu. Dia lahir di Kunyang, kota yang berada di sebelah barat daya Negeri Yunnan, pada tahun 1371. Keluarganya yang bernama Ma, adalah sebahagian daripada warga minoriti Semur. Mereka berasal dari kawasan Asia Tengah serta menganut agama Islam. Ayah dan datuk Zheng He diketahui pernah mengadakan perjalanan haji ke Tanah Suci Makkah. Zheng He adalah seorang Muslim yang taat. Yunan adalah salah satu wilayah terakhir pertahanan bangsa Mongol, yang sudah lama wujud sebelum zaman dinasti Ming. Pada waktu dinasti Ming menguasai Yunan tahun 1382, Zheng He turut ditawan dan dibawa ke Nanjing. Ketika itu dia masih berusia 11 tahun. Beberapa tahun selepas itu, Maharaja Cina telah memberikan nama Zheng He kepadanya hingga akhirnya dia menjadi salah satu panglima laut paling termashyur di dunia
